Dust coats for workshops, warehouses, labs and food production

A dust coat is a long, loose overcoat worn over your clothes. It keeps dust, grime and light splashes off your uniform. It also keeps loose fibres and pocket items off the product you handle. Every coat in this collection is made from 65% polyester and 35% cotton. Brands are JB's Wear and DNC Workwear. We can embroider your logo on every style.

There are two types here. General purpose dust coats have outside pockets for tools and pens. Food industry dust coats put every pocket inside the coat. Pick by the job, not the look.

Which dust coat should I choose?

Choose a food industry coat if you handle open food. Choose a general purpose coat for workshops, stores, labs and dispatch. The table compares all four styles.

Style Fabric Closure Pockets Colours and sizes
JB's 5HDC dust coat 65% polyester, 35% cotton drill See product page Chest pocket, two hand pockets, hidden phone pocket Navy, white, grey. 2XS to 5XL
DNC 3502 dust coat (lab coat) 65% polyester, 35% cotton, 200gsm Metal press studs Two side pockets, chest pocket with pen division Navy, medium blue, white. 87R to 122R
JB's 5FIC food industry dust coat 65% polyester, 35% cotton Concealed placket, metal ring snaps All internal: chest pocket with pen insert, two hand pockets, hidden phone pocket White. 2XS to 5XL
DNC 3501 food industry dust coat 65% polyester, 35% cotton, 200gsm Metal press studs All internal: chest pocket, two side pockets with open access White. 87R to 122R

JB's sizes run 2XS to 5XL. DNC uses numbered sizes from 87R to 122R. Check each product's size chart before you order.

Why are food industry dust coats different?

Outside pockets are a foreign matter risk. Pens, phones and gloves can fall out when you lean over a line or a bench. A food industry coat moves every pocket inside. You reach them through the front or a side opening.

The JB's 5FIC goes further. Its concealed placket covers the snaps, so no fastener sits on the outside face. A side slit gives easy access through the coat. The DNC 3501's internal side pockets also have open access.

Both food coats come in white only. White shows contamination straight away, which is the point. If your site runs a colour coding plan, ask us before you order.

Both food coats use metal fasteners. If your HACCP plan sets rules for metal on garments, check them against these coats first.

Why 65/35 polycotton?

All four coats use the same blend: 65% polyester and 35% cotton. The polyester gives strength and colour hold. It also dries fast and resists creasing. The cotton makes the fabric more breathable and softer on the skin. Both DNC coats list a 200gsm fabric weight. That is a mid-weight cloth. It is light enough to wear over a uniform all shift.

Polycotton is not flame resistant. Do not wear these coats for welding, hot work or arc flash risk. For those jobs, see our fire retardant clothing range.

Which industries use dust coats?

  • Food processing and bakeries: the JB's 5FIC and DNC 3501, with internal pockets and white fabric.
  • Warehouses, stores and dispatch: the JB's 5HDC in navy or grey hides dust and handling marks.
  • Workshops and maintenance: the JB's 5HDC or DNC 3502, both with outside pockets for pens and small tools.
  • Labs, schools and quality control: the DNC 3502 in white or medium blue. Raglan sleeves give more freedom of arm movement at the bench. For more styles, see our lab coats.
  • Pharmacies, retail counters and trade desks: any general purpose coat, with your logo on the chest.

Dust coat FAQ

What is the difference between a dust coat and a lab coat?

Very little. Both are long polycotton overcoats with a front opening. "Lab coat" usually means a white coat for science or health work. "Dust coat" usually means a coat for industrial or warehouse work, often in darker colours. The DNC 3502 is sold as both.

Are your dust coats waterproof or chemical resistant?

No. Polycotton sheds dust and catches light splashes. Liquids can still soak through, and it gives no chemical protection. Use the PPE your site's risk assessment calls for.

Do the coats offer sun protection?

DNC lists the 3502 as UPF rated. The product page does not give a UPF number. Ask us for the data sheet if you need one.

Can you put our logo on a dust coat?

Yes. We embroider or print logos on all four styles. The left chest is the most common spot. See our embroidery service.

How should I wash a polycotton dust coat?

Follow the care label sewn into the coat. Polycotton handles regular machine washing well.

Need a coat for a specific site rule?

Send us your site's uniform or food safety requirement. We'll match a coat to it, or get the supplier's data sheet before you order.
