Flame retardant work shirts for electrical, mining and industrial crews
An FR shirt is the layer you wear all shift, so it has to do two jobs: protect you if an arc flash or flash fire happens, and stay comfortable enough that nobody is tempted to roll the sleeves up or swap it for a cotton tee. Every shirt in this collection is made from flame resistant fabric, and most carry a stated arc rating, from lightweight PPE 1 drill shirts through to PPE 2 hi vis day/night shirts, with brands including Syzmik, KingGee, Hard Yakka, Bisley, DNC and JB's Wear.
We can add your logo with FR-rated embroidery, so your crew's branding doesn't put a flammable patch on a protective garment. For pants, jackets and coveralls, see the full fire retardant clothing range or go straight to FR pants.
Start with the arc rating your site needs
Your site's arc flash risk assessment sets the minimum arc rating, measured in cal/cm². Pick a shirt rated at or above it. As a rule of thumb, PPE 1 means at least 4 cal/cm² and PPE 2 means at least 8 cal/cm². You'll still see "HRC" on many labels; HRC 2 and PPE 2 mean the same thing. If your site asks for "AS/NZS 4836", that's the work-practice standard telling your employer to select arc-rated PPE from a risk assessment. Shirts aren't certified to it, so what you're really matching is the cal/cm² rating.

Keeping cool in an FR shirt
PPE 2 used to mean heavy, stiff cotton. Not anymore. The KingGee ShieldTec Lenzing and Syzmik lightweight ripstop shirts reach 10 cal/cm² or more at just 165gsm, and the Hard Yakka ShieldTec Lenzing Y04370 is only 150gsm. If you work outdoors in WA or Queensland heat, look for these lighter fabrics plus mesh venting under the arms and across the upper back, which you'll find on the Bisley Apex and Tecasafe Plus, DNC Flamearc and Syzmik meta-aramid shirts.
Inherent FR fabrics (modacrylic, aramid and LENZING FR) have flame resistance built into the fibre, so it can't wash out. The DNC Patron Saint shirts use FR cotton drill instead, which is a tough, budget-friendly option for lower-risk PPE 1 work.
Hi vis, tape patterns and closures
- Tape pattern: choose hoop taping for general site wear, or X back and biomotion taping where your site or rail network asks for it. The DNC Patron Saint 3408 is NSW Rail compliant, the Syzmik ZW187 has an NSW Rail tape configuration, and the Bisley Tecasafe Plus BS8349XT is taped for NZ TTMC-W.
- Day/night: the JB's 6DFRL complies with AS/NZS 1906.4 and is certified day and night to AS 4602.1, and it also carries ISO 11612, IEC 61482-1-1 and NFPA 2112.
- Open or closed front: closed front shirts such as the Syzmik ZW133, ZW134 and ZW143, DNC 3407 and 3408, and DNC Flamearc 3447 have a concealed placket and no gap down the front, which many electrical crews prefer.
- Trims: look for FR thread, FR press studs or buttons and FR reflective tape. A shirt is only as flame resistant as its weakest component, so metal-free FR trims matter as much as the fabric.
FR shirts FAQ
Do you stock FR shirts for women?
Yes. Women's fits include the KingGee ShieldTec Lenzing K84002 and K84003, the Syzmik ZW170 and ZW131, the DNC Flamearc 3459, five Bisley Apex styles and two Bisley Tecasafe Plus styles.
Is there an FR polo shirt?
Yes. The KingGee ShieldTec FR polo K84008 is a soft knit with hi vis taping and a minimum 14 cal/cm² rating, which suits crews who'd prefer a knit to a woven work shirt.
What should I wear under an FR shirt?
Cotton or an FR base layer. Polyester and nylon can melt onto skin in an arc flash, which defeats the point of the shirt. Our fire retardant clothing page has more on care and when to replace FR garments.
Can you put our logo on FR shirts?
Yes. We embroider FR garments with Madeira Fire Fighter aramid thread and Kevlar backing. See our embroidery service.
How long do FR shirts take to arrive?
We don't keep FR shirts in our Perth store because of the size of the range. Most styles are ordered in on confirmation and arrive within about 5 working days, plus about 5 working days if you're adding embroidery or printing.
