Flame retardant coveralls for electrical, mining and industrial crews

A coverall is the simplest way to get FR protection from collar to ankle in one garment. There's no gap at the waist when you reach overhead, no shirt to come untucked, and nothing to get wrong when the crew gets dressed at 5am. Every coverall in this collection is made from flame resistant fabric, from a 155gsm aramid PPE 1 overall to 311gsm cotton drill rated at 14 cal/cm², with brands including DNC, Syzmik, Hard Yakka, KingGee and Bisley.

We can add your logo with FR-rated embroidery, so your branding doesn't put a flammable patch on a protective garment. If your crew prefers a two-piece setup, see our FR shirts and FR pants, add an FR jacket for cold mornings, or browse the full fire retardant clothing range.

Start with the arc rating your site needs

Your site's arc flash risk assessment sets the minimum arc rating, measured in cal/cm². Pick a coverall rated at or above it. As a rule of thumb, PPE 1 means at least 4 cal/cm² and PPE 2 means at least 8 cal/cm². You'll still see "HRC" on many labels; HRC 2 and PPE 2 mean the same thing. If your site asks for "AS/NZS 4836", that's the work-practice standard telling your employer to select arc-rated PPE from a risk assessment. Coveralls aren't certified to it, so what you're really matching is the cal/cm² rating.

The table below shows what each range in this collection is made from and the rating its maker lists. Check the product page for the full spec of the exact coverall you're ordering.

Heavy cotton drill or lightweight inherent FR?

The DNC Patron Saint coveralls use treated FR cotton drill. At 311gsm they're the toughest in the range, the 3427 carries the highest listed rating here at 14 cal/cm², and DNC rates it for 50+ domestic washes at 60°C. They suit workshops, shutdowns and plant work where abrasion matters more than weight.

Inherent FR fabrics (modacrylic, aramid and LENZING FR blends) have flame resistance built into the fibre, so it can't wash out, and they're much lighter. The Syzmik ZC517 is 155gsm and the Bisley Apex BC8478T is 185gsm, against 311gsm for cotton drill. A one-piece traps more heat than a shirt and pants, so in WA or Queensland summer that weight difference counts. For a PPE 2 rating with less weight, look at the DNC Flamearc at 230gsm or the Syzmik ZC525 at 250gsm.

Features worth checking

  • Ventilation: the KingGee Y00080, DNC Flamearc 3481 and 3482, Syzmik ZC517 and Bisley BC8477T, BC8478T and BC8085T all have FR mesh vents under the arms or across the back.
  • Front closure: the Syzmik ZC517 and ZC525 and DNC Flamearc coveralls use a concealed two-way FR zip, so you can open the bottom for comfort or get out quickly. The Bisley coveralls close with covered plastic press snaps.
  • Metal parts: the DNC Flamearc coveralls list no metal components at all, which matters around live electrical work. The Patron Saint 3425 and 3427 list metal press studs, so check that against your site's rules.
  • Radio and gas monitor loops: most coveralls here have loops on the shoulders or chest, including the KingGee, Hard Yakka, DNC Flamearc, Syzmik ZC525 and Bisley Tecasafe Plus styles.
  • Reflective tape: taped coveralls carry FR reflective tape, usually in hoops around the body, arms and legs. If you work at night, check your site's day/night rules before choosing.

FR coveralls FAQ

Are overalls and coveralls the same thing?

Here, yes. Every garment in this collection is a one-piece suit with sleeves, often called a boiler suit. Makers use both names.

Do you stock FR coveralls for women?

Not in this collection at the moment. Many women on site wear a two-piece instead, and we have women's fits in our FR shirts and FR pants. Ask us if you need a women's coverall and we'll check what's available.

What should I wear under an FR coverall?

Cotton or FR underwear and base layers. Polyester and nylon can melt onto skin in an arc flash or flash fire, and that's true even under a coverall.

Can you put our logo on FR coveralls?

Yes. We embroider FR garments with Madeira Fire Fighter aramid thread and Kevlar backing. See our embroidery service.

How long do FR coveralls take to arrive?

We don't keep FR coveralls in our Perth store because of the size of the range. Most styles are ordered in on confirmation and arrive within about 5 working days, plus about 5 working days if you're adding embroidery or printing.

Not sure which coverall fits your site's spec?

Send us your site's PPE requirement and we'll match coveralls to it, or ask us for a supplier data sheet before you order.
