Fit testing and seal checks
A tight-fitting respirator only protects if it seals. Fit testing is required before a worker first wears a tight-fitting respirator, for each new make or model, and when facial features change. Qualitative testing is suitable for disposable masks, and AS/NZS 1715 describes the accepted methods. Every time the mask is put on, do a fit check to confirm the seal. Any hair on the sealing surface, including stubble, breaks the seal. See SafeWork SA guidance on fit testing and fit checking.
Limits and replacement
A dust mask does not replace extraction or ventilation, and it does not protect against gases and vapours. Replace a disposable mask when it is damaged, wet, soiled or hard to breathe through, and do not share masks. For vapours, gases or long exposure, use a reusable half mask with filter cartridges from our respirators range.
