The jacket is the layer that gets forgotten. Your FR shirt and pants are arc rated, then the weather turns and someone pulls on a normal polyester rain jacket over the top. In an arc flash or flash fire that outer layer can melt and burn, and it undoes the protection underneath. Every jacket in this collection is made for FR work, from PPE 2 cotton drill welder's jackets to a waterproof PPE 3 jacket rated at 34 cal/cm², with brands including KingGee, Syzmik and DNC.

Start with the arc rating your site needs

Your site's arc flash risk assessment sets the minimum arc rating, measured in cal/cm². Any jacket you wear over your FR clothing should meet that rating too, because your PPE is only as good as its lowest rated layer. As a rule of thumb, PPE 1 means at least 4 cal/cm², PPE 2 at least 8 cal/cm² and PPE 3 at least 25 cal/cm². You'll still see "HRC" on many labels; HRC 2 and PPE 2 mean the same thing. If your site asks for "AS/NZS 4836", that's the work-practice standard telling your employer to select arc-rated PPE from a risk assessment. Jackets aren't certified to it, so what you're really matching is the cal/cm² rating.

Wet weather, welding or cold mornings?

Rain and wind: the KingGee Y06730 is the heavy-duty option. It's seam sealed, water resistant to 10,000mm, and at ATPV 34 it's the only PPE 3 jacket in this collection, so it suits switchyard and high-energy work in the wet. The Syzmik ZJ900 is a lighter waterproof shell with a warm FR lining, a concealed hood and a storm flap. Its product page lists no arc rating, so ask us for the data sheet before relying on it for arc flash work.

Welding: the DNC Patron Saint 3431 and 3458 are drill jackets with a double fabric front to take spatter, rated at 14 cal/cm² and good for 50+ domestic washes at 60°C. The 3431 also lists ISO 11612 for heat and flame. Both use metal press studs under a cover flap, so for live electrical work look at the DNC Flamearc 3483 instead, which lists no metal components at all.

Cold starts and night shift: the DNC Flamearc 3483 is a lined, inherent FR jacket with hoop pattern FR reflective tape, radio loops and hand warmer pockets. Inherent FR fabric has flame resistance built into the fibre, so it can't wash out.

FR jackets FAQ

Can I wear any jacket over my FR shirt?

No. A standard polyester or nylon jacket can melt onto you in an arc flash or flash fire. If you need an outer layer on site, it should be FR and rated at or above your site's minimum, the same as the rest of your kit.

Is the Wildlands coat an arc flash jacket?

No. The KingGee Wildlands K85000 is a bushfire firefighting coat, made to meet AS/NZS 4824 when worn with the matching K83000 trouser. It doesn't list an arc rating, so it isn't a substitute for an arc rated jacket on electrical work.

Do you have FR jackets in women's fits?

Not in this collection at the moment. Our FR shirts and FR pants include women's styles, and we can help you find a jacket that works.

Can you put our logo on FR jackets?

Yes. We embroider FR garments with Madeira Fire Fighter aramid thread and Kevlar backing. See our embroidery service.

How long do FR jackets take to arrive?

We don't keep FR jackets in our Perth store because of the size of the range. Most styles are ordered in on confirmation and arrive within about 5 working days, plus about 5 working days if you're adding embroidery or printing.
